2/3/2010 – Press Release

“Harkham is a knock out. They’re a breath of fresh air in the Hunter Valley,”

Tony Bilson of Bilson’s Restaurant at the Radisson Plaza Hotel.

Harkham Windarra Winery, situated in the Hunter Valley, is creating unique wines with a natural philosophy. Since the Harkham family took over the estate in 2005, they have upgraded the facilities and taken an exciting new direction.

Their diverse range is made from hand-picked and hand-sorted fruit. The winery focuses on small batches of fruit selected predominately from hillside vineyards in the Hunter Valley. Minimal handling, bottling without filtration, the sole use of French oak and low levels of preservatives are just some of the techniques used by the Harkhams who worked closely with a passionate Burgundian-trained winemaker Christian Knott to create these new wines.

“Harkham and Knott’s attitude to wine-making, steeped as it is in French culture, is terrific. They’re really headed in the right direction,” Tony Bilson.

Introducing two of the recently released 2009 wines:

Aziza’s Shiraz 2009 –Preservative Free

+ Proudly the Hunter Valley’s first preservative-free wine and one of only a handful to be produced in Australia.

+ Shiraz grapes grown on a Southeast slope with volcanic soils are used to make this wine. It’s aged in French oak barrels and bottled without any fining agents

+ Alcohol 13.2%. Natural low acidity

+ No added allergens, making it the perfect drop for those searching something purer and more expressive.

+This wine has been closed traditionally, sealed with wax

+ RRP $25. Production – 120 cases.

“Aziza’s Shiraz is Cote de Rhone in style but distinctively Hunter. It shows very good tannin structures and it’s nicely seasoned with wood but not over-oaked. It’s the type of wine that drinks well now and will sit well in the bottle for many years. I think it’s far more balanced than most contemporary Hunter Shiraz’s – the acid flavours are better balanced.” Tony Bilson.

Reserve Shiraz 2009

+ Shiraz grapes grown on a South-facing slope with stony clay soil are used to make this graceful and textured Shiraz.

+ This wine has been aged in French Oak barrels for one year and traditionally bottled without fining or filtration. Minimal sulphur dioxide has been used (less than half the permitted level of a Certified Organic Wine).

+ Each bottle has been hand numbered

+ Single Vineyard, naturally low in acidity.

+ RRP $22. Production – 300 cases

“The wine-making technique they’re using requires a lot of love, care and attention,”

Tony Bilson.
